Context Recognition
Context recognition enables the provision of right services at the right time and place for the user. The objective of this work package is to develop further our existing algorithms on activity recognition and thus enable a more fluent service provision for the user.
Middleware
The research of middleware aims to develop a context-aware solution that utilizes resources efficiently. Another focus of the research is the assembly of applications from components. The components are deployed into distributed devices.

Service System
The service system work package is responsible for the development of both the new ubiquitous applications and general components which can be used by several applications.
Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor network can be widely integrated into the Internet and data systems in order to provide new services. This work package will study the application specific radio technology, protocols, and algorithms supporting the UbiLife middleware functionalities from gateways to sensor nodes.

Multimodal User Interfaces
This work package studies a selection of the central research questions related to design when combining the different user interface modalities of mobiles, web and public display into a total user interface.
Physical User Interfaces
The objective of this work package is to design new and innovative user interface concepts for selected domain specific prototypes and make the use of prototypes efficient and pleasant.
Value Creation in UBI Services
The objective of this work package is to identify and model the birth of UBI service business networks and model consumer behavior and user driven innovation and to recognize the lead users in UBI service environment.
Renewal business and work processes
This work package applies the newest systemic user and service process analysis methods and tools to analyze the improvements enabled in the proof of concept pilots. One of the main objectives of this work package is the development and documentation of application specific service and process improvements based on ubi technologies.
SensorCity Infrastructure
SensorCity is a sensor network that is being built in the City of Oulu, and it integrates several technologies and software. The data produced by the sensor network can be utilized in realizing innovative applications and services. The designing, executing and testing of SensorCity is done is phases in such manner that the results and experiences of a specific phase can be utilized in the next cycle.

DisplayCity Infrastructure
DisplayCity is a population of large public interactive displays with their control units and software, which is being built in the City of Oulu. One of the displays is large, suitable for outdoor use and situated on a visible location in the city centre. Other displays are smaller and situated mainly indoors. The designing, executing and testing of DisplayCity is done is phases in such manner that the results and experiences of a specific phase can be utilized in the next cycle.

Proof of Concept Pilots
The objective of this work package is to create, together with SMEs, R&D pilots which are comprised by a mobile telephone together with sensors situated in the environment, computers and a large public display. Commercially potential applications are selected for execution. The objective is that some of the pilots lead to the birth of respectable business in a company that already exists in the field or in companies that are founded for the execution of the applications.
